The First Board Game

The board game exited during pre-historic times. What was the very first game? Surprise! Something found in many board games today.

In southeast Turkey, the oldest game pieces were found at the Başur Höyük burial mound  .49 small stones carved and painted were found from the year 5,000 BC. Additional pieces have been found in Syria, Iraq, Nile, Tigris, and Euphrates River in the Middle East.

Early Dice

 Mesopotamian used many different materials to make earlier dice such as wood, carved knuckle bones, turtle shells and painted stones. They were created by painting on one side of the flat sticks. These flat sticks would be tossed in an accord and the amount of painted sides showing, would be your “roll”.

Ancient Egyptians were always believers in Fate. They believed a winner in the game of Senet was under the protection of their gods.  Senet board games were considered as the book of the dead. To make the afterlife journey easier, it was often placed in the grave with other useful objects.

The gameplay board game is the most similar game to match the senet game. Many companies and Historians  have guessed for the actual rules of gameplay for Senet which are sold today. The Senet board has two sets of pawns, a grid of 30 squares, arranged in three rows of ten.

The Landlord’s Game

The first broad game inventor, Lizzie Magie, was America’s first board games creator and gave us  “The Landlord’s Game” in 1904. The game board comes with four railroads, a jail, two utilities, and a corner which earned players $100 each time they passed it. Players could buy properties around the outside of a square track.

The Landlord’s game was based on the ground of Georgism, a system introduced by Henry George, with the aim to demonstrate how rents enrich property owners and impoverish tenants.

She used the Georgist idea to put the game into a solid form to make it easy for people to understand thru demonstration. Also to show children thru this game the unfairness, hoping that when they grow into adulthood they can change the laws.

Monopoly

The Landlords Game patent was sold in 1935 by Magie to Parker Brothers for $500.  The game’s name was changed into “MONOPOLY”. Monopoly became a huge success for Parker Brothers. They also made Trivial Pursuit, Risk and Sorry, and many more…

Board Gaming Becomes a Yearly World Wide Event

A Table Top web series about board games was created by Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day.. In all episodes, Will played  himself with Web and TV personalities. It has become one of the phenomena for the board game popularity.

Table Top on Television

Youtube Channel featured it as a show but it quickly became a popular series. In the beginning, the goal was that the board games would be reviewed by Wheaton.  Later it was  changed to Wil Wheaton himself playing the game to show the greatness of the game. It turned out to be a great success.

By the third season, the TableTop had grown.so it was decided to launch similar web series “Titan’s Grave: The Ashes of Vulcan”.

Green Ronin Publishing and  Geek & Sundry ( creators of several RPG titles, including Dragon Age) are teaming up to create a new game engine that they will use for their RPG game,.

Table Top Games

Popularity soared due to Table Top games. The board games  skyrocketed  in sales. Tsuro was also introduced. Game production was held off in Europe because the US demand was so high.  It is dubbed ” The Wheaton Effect” by game manufacturers.

In 2013 the YOUTUBE channel yearly event worldwide took place. On International Table Top day, live games were played by Wil and Grace with folks from different episodes.  Over 80 countries celebrated this event.  Globally many stores announced different promotions and events for participation.
